Week 4 Gingerbread and Sugar Cookie Santas

This week I chose to make gingerbread cookies and sugar cookies.  These two cookies always remind me of Christmas so the choice was simple as Christmas is only 2 days away.  I have a love/hate relationship with cookies that need to be cut with cookie cutters.  I love love love the task of rolling out the cookie dough and then decorating the cookies.  I especially love the idea because I get to use my Sito Vicky's rolling pin.  For those of you who don't know, Sito means Grandmother in Arabic.  My Sito Vicky was my maternal Great Grandmother and I loved her dearly. She moved to this country from Lebanon as a young wife and mother. She never attended school  so she was illiterate, and never learned to drive.  Despite these disadvantages, she was a phenomenally intelligent, brave, and strong woman.  I am uncertain that I would  have possessed the courage to leave my home and sail across the world to a new place like she did.  She also caused a great deal of trouble when she refused to marry the man she was prearranged to marry, and instead married my Great Grandfather. She was fierce in regards to her family, and I like to think that I get my sense of loyalty from her. My Sito Vicky passed away when I was a senior in high school so I was fortunate to have her with me for a long time.  Near the end of Sito's  life, my Mom brought her to live with us, so I got to see her everyday.  I still miss her but I think of her often.  Dan and I named Victoria after my Sito Vicky, and I think she would have been thrilled.  Below is one of my favorite pictures.  I am sitting on Sito Vicky's lap, and my Mom (on the left) and my Sito Georgia (Grandma on the right) are standing behind us.
Despite my love of this type of cookie I have to admit that I am not that adept at the decorating part.  My cookies always look like a preschooler decorated them, and inevitably I drop a few "f bombs."   I have taken up permanent residence on the naughty list anyway, so a few "f bombs"  are a small price to pay for good cookies right??  ☺

This time Victoria and Ryan did most of the decorating so it's fitting that they look like kids decorated them.  We made gingerbread and sugar cookies.  The sugar cookies we made to look like Santa.  We used homemade frosting and candy to decorate.  Here are the links for the recipes:

  3. Your cookies turned out great! How wonderful that you have your Sito Vicky's rolling pin. I'm sure Victoria will be proud to use that rolling pin when she is making cookies on her own one day too! Speaking of "f bombs"...I was making green wreath cookies today which involved melting marshmallows in the microwave. Ford was in the kitchen "helping" me, and I inadvertently taught him the "f" word. Oops!

  4. You go Kimmy! How are you decorating them? I have a ridiculously simple home made recipe for frosting with literally three ingredients...let me know if you want it : )

Dean...it's not disrespectful at all...she was beautiful ♥. I can't believe how light my hair was when I was young but I agree my face hasn't changed that much. I remember when I was little, I would look in the mirror and wonder what I'd look like when I was old... ya know like 30 or so...and in truth I look pretty much the same. Some people change a lot from their baby/childhood pix but I did not : )

Briana...I laughed out loud when I read that : ) Did you use red hots or M&M's as the holly berries? YUM

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment...that makes the project much more fun for me ♥

  5. Chris - I used Red Hots. I had a hard time finding them until Dean suggested I go to Z's. Next time, I will probably try red mini M&M's.
